There are many cue sport simulators out there, and most of them function in a similar manner. Drag your finger backwards much like a catapult, then release to send the cue flying forwards to strike the ball. 8 Ball Pool by Miniclip included.

It was a real disappointment to find that Miniclip barely had any distinctive features in their rendition of a cue sport simulator to distinguish it from similar games in the app store. I was expecting something greater given the great repute of the developer but it seems like the biggest draw of the app lies in the multiplayer function, which again can be found in lots of other simulators available for download.

But to assess it as an individual app on its own, I must say that 8 Ball Pool does what it was designed for very well. There’s hardly much to gripe about. Visuals are clear, with the table and balls clearly drawn and marked without fanciful effects that more often than not worsen things. Control were great too, with the standard pull back and aim method working fairly accurately, though I would say an iPad user will most definitely have an easier time aiming compared to one on the smaller screens found on iPhones and iPod Touches.

However, what upset me most about this game was the inherent urge for players to get themselves in-app purchases to advance well in the game. Despite being a paid app for download, 8 Ball Pool charges players further for unlockable perks and whatnot.

To be honest, similar apps with standards on par with if not better than this one can be found for free on the app store.

Quick Take

Value:Low

Would I Buy Again:No

Learning Curve:Simple, pull and release

Who Is It For:Cue sport fans

What I Like:The actual gameplay and interface are pretty decent

What I Don't Like:The game decides to charge for advancement despite being a paid app

Final Statement:There are better cue apps in the market
