I finally got an iPad 2 a week or so ago and never owned the first generation, so this was my first opportunity to review an iPad-specific game. All I can say is: wooooooowwwwww!
Real Racing 2 HD has graphics I have never seen outside of a major gaming console. It stands as proof that the iPad could give the XBox and/or PS3 a run for their money. The graphics are unparalleled and the gameplay is as smooth as watching a movie. The attention to detail within the game is also incredible. There are even repercussions for crashing your vehicle like doors hanging off and such.
There is a choice of several tracks to race on and many cars. Sadly, you start the game with a scant $25,000, so you can’t buy a top-of-the-line Mercedes off the bat. That is earned from winning races. I started with a Volkswagen Golf GTI and I finished 8th in the race. Hey, I’m only starting. It was damned exciting, though.
I do have one or two complaints. I leave it to the individual to decide whether to spend $10 on a game (although it is cheaper than its game console equivalents), but at that price it would be nice if AirPlay was activated and one could play the game through their Apple TV. I understand it is possible using the iPad 2 HDMI adapter and AirPlay may be available in a future update (also, the Apple TV can only play 720p as opposed to the full 1080p possible with the HDMI adapter). It must look very cool on a big, flat screen TV.
If you’re into racing games and own an iPad 2, then this is a must-have.
