So a while back there was a new craze called Fingerboarding, whereby finger sized skateboards manipulated by ones fingers were used to perform pint-sized kickflips and tricks some would deem too dangerous to perform while standing on an actual skateboard. Now, with True Skate, the magnificence of actual skateboarding and the safety of fingerboarding are combined into one digital app.

True Skate appears to be every skater’s dream come true. An entirely empty skate park with obstacles such as ramps and railings to maneuver around and perform tricks on. The skate park is beautifully rendered, for starters, with details of the park and surroundings being beautifully rendered in 3D and worthy of being compared to those of the Tony Hawk series.

Controls appear to be a breeze too, for players manipulate their boards with swipes and flicks of their fingers to perform jaw-dropping stunts. To add to the realism, only the skateboard is displayed on the screen, without an awkward looking skater figure which I very much appreciated.

The downside, however, lies in the amount of screen area needed to properly play this game. While I tested this game on my iPhone 4S, I found the screen a tad to small to play with. Granted, the game loaded and played out smoothly without much hiccups but the 3.5 inch display was definitely not enough real estate for my fingers to roam around freely. I highly doubt the iPhone 5, despite the slightly larger screen, would fare any better too for the game is just too awkward to play out on such a small surface. However, the game works wonders on the iPad, given the large real estate for your fingers to travel across. While not exactly a favorite of mine for the smaller iOS devices, this one is definitely a hit with the iPad.

Priced at $1.99, I strongly recommend the purchase of this app.

Quick Take

Value:High

Would I Buy Again:Yes

Learning Curve:Simple, the board is easy to handle but complicated tricks will take longer to master

Who Is It For:Skate fans

What I Like:The flexibility the app gives over the tricks performed as well as the large park to explore

What I Don't Like:Game is difficult to play on a small screen, but hey, the developers cannot do anything about it either

Final Statement:Performing kickflips no longer means having to risk bruised knees.
